Application: FIT + MIT, AFFOA Workshop in Advanced Functional Fabrics 2021/2022

This two-week program (January 3-14, 2022) provides a unique, educational experience for FIT undergraduates interested in the design and engineering of products made of fibers, yarns and textiles that a participant can readily apply to future challenges and professional pursuits. Students will have the opportunity to collaborate with students from MIT on this team  project.

This program is open to students majoring in Fashion Design, Textiles Surface Design, Textile Development and Marketing, Menswear, and Technical Design. The program includes mentor presentations, virtual tours of relevant facilities in Cambridge/NYC, and the opportunity to become familiar with specialized equipment and a network of industry experts. The program will enable students to learn about and use state of the art 3D textile apparel manufacturing methods. Students will gain an understanding of how to use these technologies to make aesthetically pleasing and functional products with non-traditional materials such as bio-engineered or electrically conductive yarns. Finally, by bringing together FIT and MIT students, participants will experience working in multi-disciplinary teams to virtually prototype and develop new products as part of an industry prototyping challenge sponsored by Ministry of Supply.

The workshop is limited to 6 students each from FIT and MIT. Preference is given to junior and senior undergraduates.  Application deadline:  October 15th, 2021 at 12:00pm.  For questions email: Judith Bowens, FIT DTech managing director (judith_bowens@fitnyc.edu).

Please note:   This workshop will be held remotely in January, and is preceded by an online, self-paced pre-workshop occurring for 1-1.5 days in December.  Dates TBD.
